Richard HALSTEAD and Ellen HAWORTH, both of this parish, were married by banns on on 1 January 1816 in St.James, Church Kirk, Lancashire

Both made their mark

Witnesses; William KENYON and James ROTHWELL [same witnesses for all marriages on the same day]

 

James, son of Richard and Ellen HALSTEAD, Accrington, Dyer, was baptised on 23 June 1816 in St.James, Church Kirk, Lancashire

Nancy, daughter of Richard and Ellen HALSTEAD, Allitroids [Alleytroyds], Dyer, was baptised on 24 May 1818 in St.James, Church Kirk, Lancashire

 

Death Notice (Cape Archives) for James says his parents were Richard HALSTEAD and Ellen ELSTEAD. The DN says he has one sister alive, Mrs. COOMANS. His elder brother Thomas died in the 1838 massacre with Piet Retief. His name appears on the Monument as T. HOLSTEAD.

 

Thomas HALSTEAD may have been Ellen's son and adopted by Richard, although this might mean that Ellen's age is wrong in The Settler Handbook, as otherwise she would have been about 12 when Thomas was born
