Death Notice (Cape Archives) says he was born in County Carlo[w], Ireland, the son of James GOSS and Nanny DOREY

16th July 1798 Mich. GOSS baptised PB James and Ann, SS Henry NAUGHTON and Kitty McCARDLE, Drumguin
[PB thought to mean Private Baptism, SS=sponsors]

10th March 1805 James GOSS son of James and Anne, Drumguin [sponsors] Jno. KELLY and Margt. GOSS

                               

[Rathvilly, County Carlow is very close to the border with County Wicklow, where BUTLER's Party was recruited. Drumguin is about 15 kilometers away from the town of Rathvilly and appears to be actually in the Parish of Hacketstown. The Roman Catholic Church in Hacketstown was not built until 1803.]

A James GOSS sailed on the Barossa with John INGRAM's second group of settlers. The Barossa left Cork on 20 September 1823 and arrived in Capetown on 12 December. James GOSS was listed as being 25.

 
The Death Notice (Cape Archives) for James GOSS is consistent with a birth in 1805 (as per baptism above), but there was also another James GOSS who died in 1848 Death Notice (Cape Archives)
