At the York Summer Assizes of 1812 Francis Parratt BENTLEY was charged with bigamy but found Not Guilty. Both the above marriages were from banns registers but with a date of marriage listed. In the banns register for St.John the Baptist, Halifax, for 1819, is the following entry:
Banns of marriage between Francis Parrott BENTLEY, cardmaker, and Harriot KITCHEN, both of Southowram in this Parish were published on the three Sundays underwritten, that is to say, on Sunday the 2, 9 and 16 May 1819.
Records show that it was Harriet who went to the Cape as the wife of Francis, and not Elizabeth as given in The Settler Handbook. Harriet's monumental inscription saya that she died in 1854, aged 68.
