Francis Parrit, son of William BENTLEY, Halifax, Merchant, baptised 8 September 1783 in St. John the Baptist, Halifax, Yorkshire

 

William BENTLEY of Halifax, [wid'r?] Merchant, and Alice CLAPHAM of the same place, spinster, were married by licence on 26 July 1781 in St.John the Baptist, Halifax

Witnesses: Robt. THEAKSTONE and [Jno. ANDERSON?]

Francis Parritt BENTLEY of Heaton and Elizabeth MALLISON of High Town, both in the Parish of Birstall were married in this church by Banns on the 18th March 1805

30 July 1809 Francis Parriot BENTLEY and Harriott KITCHIN of this parish were married by Banns

At the York Summer Assizes of 1812 Francis Parratt BENTLEY was charged with bigamy but found Not Guilty. Both the above marriages were from banns registers but with a date of marriage listed. In the banns register for St.John the Baptist, Halifax, for 1819, is the following entry:

Banns of marriage between Francis Parrott BENTLEY, cardmaker, and Harriot KITCHEN, both of Southowram in this Parish were published on the three Sundays underwritten, that is to say, on Sunday the 2, 9 and 16 May 1819.

Records show that it was Harriet who went to the Cape as the wife of Francis, and not Elizabeth as given in The Settler Handbook. Harriet's monumental inscription saya that she died in 1854, aged 68.

Baptisms of remaining children not found.

 

John BENTLEY was killed in the 6th Frontier War on 9 May 1835 and is memorialised in the tablet in St.John's Church Bathurst.
