pre 1820 Settler Correspondence before emigration

ALL the 1819 correspondence from CO48/41 through CO48/46 has been transcribed whether or not the writers emigrated to the Cape. Those written by people who did become settlers, as listed in "The Settler Handbook" by M.D. Nash (Chameleon Press 1987), are labelled 1820 Settler and the names of actual settlers in the text appear in red.

WINDRYER, Charles

National Archives, Kew CO48/46, 466/470

Purfleet, Essex

23rd Sept 1819

My Lord,

I beg leave to address myself to your Lordship for permission to proceed to the Cape of Good Hope under the conditions expressed in the circular letter issued from the department of which your Lordship is the head.

Herewith I have the honour to forward the list of the ten men with their families who are desirous of going with me, on which I beg to make one remark: that uninformed as I am of the description of persons which your Lordship may think the most eligible to emigrate, I have only studied to solicit men of good character and industrious habits and in respect to two of the party, viz Henry MATTERS and Joseph DELL, it was an additional recommendation to me that notwithstanding such are their characters they are not able to maintain themselves and families without the [aid] of their respective parishes.

It may not be deemed improper for me to add that I am possessed of a capital beyond the required deposit sufficient to carry into effect the object I have in view.

I have the honor to be my Lord with the highest respect

Your Lordship's humble servant

Charles WINDRYER
