pre 1820 Settler Correspondence before emigration

ALL the 1819 correspondence from CO48/41 through CO48/46 has been transcribed whether or not the writers emigrated to the Cape. Those written by people who did become settlers, as listed in "The Settler Handbook" by M.D. Nash (Chameleon Press 1987), are labelled 1820 Settler and the names of actual settlers in the text appear in red.

Sir

I beg leave to acquaint you that it is my desire to propose to his Majesty's Government becoming a Settler at the Cape of Good Hope for which purpose I am prepared to comply with the conditions laid down. I therefore beg you will be pleas'd to furnish me with necessary information as to the mode I am to adopt for the attainment of such object. I herewith annex a list of the names of the people I intend taking out with me exclusive of their families.
