pre 1820 Settler Correspondence before emigration

ALL the 1819 correspondence from CO48/41 through CO48/46 has been transcribed whether or not the writers emigrated to the Cape. Those written by people who did become settlers, as listed in "The Settler Handbook" by M.D. Nash (Chameleon Press 1987), are labelled 1820 Settler and the names of actual settlers in the text appear in red.

My Lord

Having seen and perused one of the printed particulars as are issued from the Secretary of States Office respecting going to the Cape of Good Hope I beg leave to offer myself as a settler having a wife and 3 children under 14 years of age - by trade a carpenter and joiner and my age 28 - so far as I can understand the meaning of the paper I have received - but with respect to the money being deposited with many other particulars I am at a loss and must wait your answer to this letter informing me in what manner I am to proceed waiting for the same I remain my Lord

Sir,

Your letter I received of the 28 of July and being an answer to one I sent wherein you state that Government does not attend to any single applications, I beg leave therefore in answer to your last to know if four of us can unite ourselves with a partie of ten - in the name of Mr. PAYNE of Paxton Street, Tottenham Court Road who I am informed by My PAYNE have made application and is now before Government for their consideration & approval if we can be united it will make the number 14. having made application to Mr PAYNE and who has no kind of objection - your answer this afternoon will be considered an obligation and favor as Mr PAYNE's partie meet this evening respecting the business.
