Hon Sir,
I being lately private soldier in the 103rd Regt of Foot and being wounded at Lake Erie in North America has been discharged on a small pension of 6d a day which I find totally inadequate to my support, together with a wife & child, and hearing that His Majesty's Government is giving encouragement to British Subjects to settle in the Cape of Good Hope. Most humbly request that the Rt Hon Earl BATHURST will deign to send such information to me as may let me know what encouragement would be given to me on that account as there are many pensioners in the vicinity waiting as well for such information.
I am Hon Sir with due respect
Your very humble serv't
James GREGAN
