pre 1820 Settler Correspondence before emigration

ALL the 1819 correspondence from CO48/41 through CO48/46 has been transcribed whether or not the writers emigrated to the Cape. Those written by people who did become settlers, as listed in "The Settler Handbook" by M.D. Nash (Chameleon Press 1987), are labelled 1820 Settler and the names of actual settlers in the text appear in red.

August 7^th 1819

Hon Sir,

I being lately private soldier in the 103^rd Regt of Foot and being wounded at Lake Erie in North America has been discharged on a small pension of 6d a day which I find totally inadequate to my support, together with a wife & child, and hearing that His Majesty's Government is giving encouragement to British Subjects to settle in the Cape of Good Hope. Most humbly request that the Rt Hon Earl BATHURST will deign to send such information to me as may let me know what encouragement would be given to me on that account as there are many pensioners in the vicinity waiting as well for such information.
