as preserved in the National Archives, Kew

pre 1820 Settler Correspondence before emigration

ALL the 1819 correspondence from CO48/41 through CO48/46 has been transcribed whether or not the writers emigrated to the Cape. Those written by people who did become settlers, as listed in "The Settler Handbook" by M.D. Nash (Chameleon Press 1987), are labelled 1820 Settler and the names of actual settlers in the text appear in red.

Chelsea

30 July 1819

Sir,

We the undersigned most respectfully beg leave to inform you that we possess the means of carrying out twenty able bodied individuals whose names, occupation, ages &c are described on the other side. We are determined for the purpose of employing and keeping those twenty men & their families of obtaining a grant of land in the colony of the Cape of Good Hope with a free passage thereto under the conditions & regulations contained in the printed circular & are ready to pay the necessary deposits for that purpose.

We feel confident in our means & ability for the undertaking & are ready to furnish the most respectable refferences to that effect & to submit ourselves to your personal examination.

The twenty individuals for whom we apply we doubt not will be found objects such as it is your intention to relieve being all hard working but destitute men.

We hope Sir this application may meet your approval, but should you not be pleased to treat with us jointly we beg leave to offer ourselves as separate applicants, each of us applying for ten of the individuals described on the other side. Your further instruction is humbly solicited & an answer will be thankfully received.

We remain Sir

Your most obedient humble servants

A. CONNELLY 10 Kings Road Chelsea
