pre 1820 Settler Correspondence before emigration

ALL the 1819 correspondence from CO48/41 through CO48/46 has been transcribed whether or not the writers emigrated to the Cape. Those written by people who did become settlers, as listed in "The Settler Handbook" by M.D. Nash (Chameleon Press 1987), are labelled 1820 Settler and the names of actual settlers in the text appear in red.

Sir,

As it is my wish to go to the Cape I shall feel obliged to you by favouring me with one of your circulars and if it would not be intruding too much on your kindness beg an answer to the following questions, viz:

1^st In the event of a certain number of persons being fully prepared, will the Government allow them to depart before Nov'r

2^nd What tonnage will government allow to each individual or will it be allowed to take out with you Bed and Cooking utensils

3^rd What compliment will government allow

4^th Shall the settlers have the protection of a military post
