pre 1820 Settler Correspondence before emigration

ALL the 1819 correspondence from CO48/41 through CO48/46 has been transcribed whether or not the writers emigrated to the Cape. Those written by people who did become settlers, as listed in "The Settler Handbook" by M.D. Nash (Chameleon Press 1987), are labelled 1820 Settler and the names of actual settlers in the text appear in red.

My Lord,

Having heard that it was the intention of Government to send out a colony to the South of Africa and being a poor industrious man with a family I take the liberty of offering myself to your Lordship's consideration. I am a carpenter and find it impossible to support a wife and three children by my most earnest endeavours. I therefore hope your Lordship will have the goodness to include me and my family among those going out and I trust I shall always be found willing to promote the welfare and prosperity of the colony by my industry and good conduct and will ever pray for your Lordship
