Peter TAIT led an earlier party of settlers to the Cape. The correspondence by William TAIT concerns a second wave of emigration.
The TAIT family came from the small parish of Whitsome and Hilton in Berwickshire. Peter and William were the sons of Joshua TAIT of Langrigg.

Also of Elizabeth GAIR who died 6 June 1787 aged 94 years.
Joseph TAIT of Longridge died 7 August 1800 aged 66 years.
Wife Jenat JOHNSTON died 18 March 1811 aged 72 years.
Son James TAIT died 1 October 1764 aged 7 weeks.
Son Joseph TAIT died 24 February 1792 aged 12 years
119: In memory of Agnes HOGARTH spouse of Peter TAIT tenant of Horndean who died at Horndean 13 March 1817 aged 38 years.
Also the said Peter TAIT died Charleston in the USA 18 May 1836 aged 55 years
