His will  (Cape Archives), despite the spelling, says he was born in Hilperton, Wiltshire

James HAYWARD, who eventually emigrated in JAMES' Party, was baptised in Hilperton, Wiltshire on 3 July 1785, the son of Thomas HAYWARD and Susan BRICKTER, although he was probably born in 1781.

 

James HAYWARD married Tabitha PRISTOW by banns on 14 March 1797 in Westbury, Wiltshire

Both made their mark

Witnesses: William HOBBS and John CURRIER

 

Tabitha was the daughter of John PRISTOW and Grace TOWNING and was baptised in Westbury on 24 February 1777.

£22:10s deposit paid for James HAYWARD of Chalford to emigrate to the Cape of Good Hope.

 

The family of James HAYWARD appears on the return made by John COLSTON of Frome, originally accepted as a Party Leader. When COLSTON was recalled to his regiment after Peterloo this party was merged with Samuel JAMES' Party from Westbury
